Most bicyclists deaths are the result of a severe head injury. Helmets are one of the most important preventive measures for reducing head injury during a crash. Traditionally, bicycle helmets are made from foam. Our team's goal is to explore how 3D printing might provide better options for safety.

The second experiment involves studying the effects of personal listening devices on acoustic situation awareness.

Located on a sheep farm in Virginia, a structure will be arranged to give an alternate audiovisual perception of wind. The structure will use tensioned acoustic strings to relay the varying wind speeds harmonies. The responsive nature of the space will provide a safe alternative to connect to one’s environment.

Responsive to the region, this curriculum focuses on sustainability in agriculture and engineering and aims to mitigate existing academic opportunity gaps for rural students.

Virginia Tech University Libraries and Entomology Department are creating a digital library of 3D insect models from the Virginia Tech Insect Collection. This project explores new practices for curating biodiversity specimens for educational access. Our work uses photogrammetry, taking hundreds of images of an object, from every possible angle; then using specialized software to process those images into 3D models.

Immersive analytics is an emerging field of data exploration and analysis in immersive environments. The main idea is to use visual analytics in a fully immersive 3D space. The availability of immersive extended reality systems has increased tremendously recently, but it is still not as widely used as conventional 2D displays. We describe an immersive analysis system for spatio-temporal data and compare its performance in an immersive environment and on a conventional 2D display.

General ItemIn-vehicle intelligent voice agent: Speech style vs. embodiment, which matters more?
In a fully autonomous vehicle setting, we found that both the conversational speech style and the embodiment (i.e., using a robot) of the agent promoted drivers’ likability and perceived warmth, whereas conversational voice agents received higher anthropomorphism and animacy scores, and the robot agents received higher competent scores.

We developed an in-vehicle gesture-based menu navigation system with three different auditory displays: auditory icons, earcons, and spearcons. We also developed two different hand-recognition systems: fixed and adaptive. We are conducting an experiment using a driving simulator where participants engage in menu navigation as a secondary task.

This allows students to practice identification and spatial relationship tasks from their own computer or VR headset. The work is a collaboration between Veterinary Medicine researchers and the University Libraries.

Presence, engagement, and a real connection are difficult to establish through virtual exhibits. To explore these challenges, we partnered with the Liberation War Museum in Bangladesh and created a web-based 3D virtual museum where three galleries have three different presentation modalities - "self-guided," "avatar-guided," and "game-based." We explore their learnability, usability, and engagement.

The immersive experience is designed to engage a single participant in a virtual ecosphere engaging all five senses. Characters are physical interactive props, have VIVE tracking, and are puppeteered by a team of live performers.
