Students Engaged in Creativity + Innovation (SECI) Grants for trans-disciplinary, collaborative student-teams from across VT.

From imagination to innovation, the Creativity + Innovation Strategic Growth Area (C+I) empowers students to collaborate beyond boundaries. It melds the the exploration of innovative technologies and the design of creative experiences with best practices for developing impact-driven and meaningful outcomes and solutions. C+I builds and strengthens creative communities; supports economic development; and enhances the quality of life through self-sustaining and entrepreneurial activities.

Project Funding: maximum $1500 per team selected. Additionally, teams may be provided with work and/or storage space if requested and available.

Project Team: Teams must be comprised of at least 3 students, from at least 2 different colleges. If two team members are from the same college they must be from different departments within that college. For each team member please submit: Name, College and Major, Year, and VT PID.

Proposals should involve two or more of the following areas represented by the C+I SGA.

Faculty Advisor: One faculty advisor is required per team, however teams may opt to have more than one team advisor. Please submit the Name, Department, and VT PID of the Team Advisor(s).

Important Dates:

  • Submission Due Date: by 5PM, Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018
  • Announcement: Monday, March 4, 2018
  • Funded teams agree to exhibit their work at ICAT Creativity + Innovation Day, Monday, April 30, 2018 and/or the Virginia Tech Science Festival in the fall of 2018. Teams retain right of ownership to their project, however teams agree to submit final documentation of their project, which C+I and ICAT may use for publication purposes.

Submission format: Submissions will be limited to 3 pages (8 1/2”X 11”), in PDF format, 3MB or under, including all text and images, emailed to and (no video or audio files, please.) Submissions should include the following:

Project Title:

Project Description/Statement of Innovation: In 500 words or fewer, please describe the area you are seeking to explore or the problem you are seeking to resolve. You may include images needed to clarify your Project Description.

Anticipated Outcome: Briefly describe the ultimate outcome your project seeks to pursue.

Alignment with C+I Goals: Briefly describe how this project/exploration aligns with the C+I statement above.

Budget: Specify the amount of funding you anticipate needing. Funds are intended for purchase of materials and necessary equipment not readily available at VT, and project related travel with C+I approval.
