Ever wonder why oil and water don’t mix? That’s because the molecules in oil are hydrophobic (water-fearing). Hydrophobic molecules are an important part of our biochemistry. These liquids also separate because of their different densities, which depends on how the molecules fit together. We’ll demonstrate hydrophobic interactions and differing densities by making lava lamps, and you can follow along at home! All you need is a clear water bottle, oil, food coloring, alka seltzer, and glitter (optional).
