Dancing Bubbles
Engineers teamed up with a choreographer for a radical, creative approach to visualizing microscopic acoustic phenomena. The result was a choreography based on the spatial configurations of the bubbles in the acoustic cell sorting experiments. The choreographic project was to help the researchers better visualize the phenomena and to help engage all students in the process of scientific discovery not just students of science and engineering. Twenty-six undergraduate students (19 dancers, 3 videographers, and 4 engineering designers) from diverse majors representing six colleges at Virginia Tech participated in the project. The dance was filmed in The Cube at Moss Arts Center from an overhead vantage point to mimic the microfluidic channel of the acoustic wave experiments. Engineers stated that seeing the recorded dance has already led them to explore several new applications for the research.
