BioTech Couture is a larger fashion project that aims to initiate conversations about design and engineering while encouraging ideation in ways that transcend the typical constraints of wearable biosensor technology. This first artificial object is an expression unto this theory, and contemplates how a society may progress when faced with a greater need for continuous biometric data. Such a future could see healthcare become more decentralized and accessible to those who wish to gain powerful insights about their health, activity, or medical needs. We could also find a necessity in protecting the public from future outbreaks of disease with increased monitoring and data analysis. In either case, a custom framework must be established in order to ethically confront these questions, and provide a precedent for self expression that breaks free of the current limitations of the health monitoring market.

Sensors can be embedded into the Maxilla (facial jewelry piece) to measure respiration and perspiration from the user, while also acting as a frame to support a cloth face mask. The custom outfit can be used to measure heart rate while tracking the musculoskeletal system through interfacing with the spine. The LED fiber optics visualize this health data in real time, and put it on display for a greater audience. These are two parts of a larger project which will produce four outfits over the course of two semesters, with a show planned for Spring 2022.
