The ARTx (Art, Research, and Technology Exchange) initiative was launched by Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) in fall 2023, under the direction of Kyle Hutchins, D.M.A., assistant professor of practice in the School of Performing Arts.

In its first year, ARTx has focused on forging partnerships with national and international institutions to highlight the creative research and scholarship of Virginia Tech faculty. The initiative emphasizes collaborations with peer institutions that feature spatial audio and multimedia performance spaces and festivals.

Through this program, Virginia Tech faculty will travel to present their work, while ICAT will host visiting faculty from partner institutions. These guests will participate in the New Music + Technology Festival in the Cube, give guest lectures, contribute to teaching, and engage in networking opportunities with students and faculty.

Why ARTx?

When institutions have highly specialized research spaces for art-making, sharing work with other institutions can become challenging, if not impossible. ARTx addresses this issue by creating a network of institutions that enables researchers to develop work that can be adapted for multiple specialized spaces, rather than being confined to just one.
