Light and Shadow Instruments

The Light and Shadow Instruments Project merges architecture and the performing arts through a transdisciplinary collaboration that explores the musical potential of daylight. The Instruments—architectural models designed to capture and measure solar angles during equinoxes and solstices—will be exhibited and discussed. As a work in progress, we will share some collaborative process as we develop the instruments and their uses in a pedagogical context.
The Light and Shadow Instruments are 3D printed architectural constructions or models. They were designed by a group of faculty and students working together. Following an iterative and experimental process, the instruments emerged through conversation, sketching, digital model, and eventually a precise fabrication and physical assembly methodology.
