ICAT Playdate — Voices of Voice Assistants

March 7, 2025

People are increasingly interacting with devices through voice assistants, who tend to use relatively homogenous forms of English, despite the large variety of dialects and accents their users have. In our work we've been exploring the impact of the regional accent (specifically Southern vs. Mainstream US English) of a voice assistant across a number of tasks, on both behavioral measures (memory tasks, driving performance, fact endorsement) and subjective evaluations of the Voice Assistant.
