CRSE Playdate – Technology is the Future (of Evaluation)

CRSE Playdate

Each year, government agencies such as National Science Foundation and National Aeronautics and Space Administration as well as hundreds of colleges and universities sponsor outreach and education events designed to engage the public. Measuring the efficacy of these outreach events is increasingly critical to sponsoring agencies/ organizations and their stakeholders. An interdisciplinary team of VT investigators from ICAT, education, engineering, and computer science have leveraged multiple emerging technologies with a goal to more accurately examine the experiences of participants at large-scale outreach events. We do this by exploring the combined use of wearable sensors (e.g., accelerometers and cameras), remote sensors (e.g.,LiDAR and building-embedded accelerometers), and innovative participant-generated artifacts of intended learning outcomes as part of groundbreaking evaluation protocols. The long-term intent is for data to be streamed in real-time to participants as a way to inform and engage the public in the evaluation process.
