Athletes' Brains...There Is Something Fishy Going On
Fralin Life Sciences Institute • Virginia Tech Athletics

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury. More than 3 million athletes in the U.S. experience a sports-related concussion every year. There is some evidence that omega-3 fatty acids – the type of fat found in fish and algae – can support athletes’ brain health and play a role in the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury. At this VT Science Festival exhibit, we will tell you about our ongoing omega-3 research with football athletes, demonstrate the helmet device used to track head impact in practices and games, and share strategies for increasing omega-3 fats in your diet.
