Rapid Response Projects

The connection between people separated by distance has been a research interest of the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (and its Centers for Human Computer Interaction and for Educational Networks and Impacts) for a while, but the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified this challenge and increased its urgency. Given this, ICAT has implemented a rapid response call in three areas of immersive connections.

The Virtual Sculpture Garden will help keep people connected through the arts in a time of physical distancing by exhibiting 3D artwork from Virginia Tech and the surrounding community in a dynamically expanding virtual reality experience.

Girls Launch

Girls Launch! Kindergarten Science Outreach Continuation and Expansion

Girls Launch! aims to create 10 engaging and kindergarten-appropriate science videos for use at Eastern Elementary/Middle School (Giles County) and beyond, providing an alternative to the in-person visits should a school closure situation arise in the future.

Connecting Virginia Learning Communities - New eXtended Reality based Library Tools
When the challenges due to the COVID-19 restrictions are removed, group activities in schools and workplaces will resume but will also have to adapt to the new reality where COVID-19 and similar pandemics can occur. We are proposing timely solutions that would support group activities while enhancing University connections to learning communities throughout the Commonwealth.

Virtual Sculpture Garden
We intend to create a virtual environment that serves as an explorable, location independent, 3D sculpture garden for born-digital 3D artworks. This virtual environment will be hosted by the University Libraries and powered by Unity, and will be viewable through both a traditional desktop browser as well as fully-immersive virtual reality headsets.

Process and Interface for Remote Choreographic Creation

We will be creating a novel technology for procedural choreographic generation that builds on remote collaboration by emphasizing the computer as the collaborative enabler. We will develop custom software that experiments with the accuracies, successes, and failings of artificial intelligence and computer vision as an intermediary between a choreographer and remotely located dancers.

Supporting Remote Design Critique of Physical Objects through Collaborative Augmented Reality

Our team will develop a smartphone-based Augmented Reality (AR) tool to enable natural, spatial, synchronous collaboration around designed 3D artifacts. Specifically, our tool will support the real-time design critique of physical mockups by students and instructors in Industrial Design (ID).

Bridging the Gap - Creating Community Connections to Develop and Deliver Effective Remote Learning Opportunities

Our team intends to develop high quality STEM-based educational strategies to minimize the achievement gap for rural Virginia students upon return to in-class instruction. Our goal is to design not only the educational experiences for the targeted students, but also unique modes of delivery and assessment.
