Bare Soil is Bad!

Our exhibit shows in real time how much dirt is picked up and carried into streams during a heavy rain. Before simulating rainfall onto three boxes of soil with either no cover, straw mulch, or plant cover, the audience will be asked how clean the water draining from each of the boxes will look, and why. After draining water from each box into jars, we will ask the audience to explain what they think happened, and then we will expand our conversation to talk about why soil erosion is so bad for farms, fish, and everyone who loves clean water.
