Indigenous Data Sovereignty

Rethinking Ethical Training of Large Language Models

This project explores how artificial intelligence can be made more ethical and inclusive by  drawing on Indigenous principles of data sovereignty. Large Language Models (LLMs), such  as those powering generative AI tools like ChatGPT, are trained on vast datasets that often overlook the cultural origins, ownership, and governance of knowledge. “Indigenous Data  Sovereignty: Rethinking Ethical Training of Large Language Models” brings together  engineering, geography, and Indigenous studies to develop frameworks that respect  community rights and promote responsible AI development. By combining systematic  research with Indigenous governance insights, the project reimagines how AI can be  accountable, transparent, and culturally grounded, advancing ICAT’s mission to integrate  creativity, empathy, and innovation in addressing pressing societal challenges.
