2023 CHCI Workshop on Big Ideas in Human Computer Interaction (HCI)

March 17, 2023

The Center for Human-Computer Interaction (CHCI) will host its seventh  annual workshop on the Future of HCI on Friday, March 17, 2023, on the theme “Big Ideas in HCI” in Squires, Brush Mountain A.  Sang Won Lee will lead the workshop.

CHCI invites you to submit an abstract of our big idea in HCI by Friday, February 24.  It is a unique opportunity for researchers—faculty members and students —to propose work on complex challenges relevant to human-computer interaction.

In an ever-changing world, technology has brought about new societal, technical, and environmental challenges that require interdisciplinary approaches. The CHCI Big Ideas workshop is designed to provide a platform for researchers to initiate an intellectual discourse about their ideas with CHCI members and experts. Specifically, the workshop will provide opportunities for researchers to

  • Pitch big ideas that they want to work on in the near future

  • Receive feedback from established researchers who have conducted interdisciplinary projects

  • Discuss the idea with other attendees for brainstorming and feedback

  • Find collaborators to work on their ideas for future external funding

  • Refine ideas that can be submitted to the CHCI planning grant program (faculty only) soon after the workshop

Individuals and teams are invited to submit an abstract (max one page) that sparks new ideas and provokes thought by Feb 24th. Submissions will be reviewed for relevance to the workshop objectives and their potential for integration with novel ideas. Participating faculty members of the workshop will be encouraged to submit a CHCI planning grant proposal, which can be used to prepare their ideas for large-scale, externally funded research efforts.

We also invite the Virginia Tech community to join us on March 17, 2023 for the workshop, as we explore new connections and create new collaborations in this exciting and growing area.

Registration for the workshop is open. There is no charge for participation but space is limited.

In addition to the workshop lead, the organizing committee comprises Kurt Luther, Doug Bowman , Todd Ogle, Abby Walker, Meredith Drum, Andrea Kavanaugh, and Shreya Mitra.
