The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), with the center for Innovative Technology, created a software application development program, Apps4VA, to support the development and implementation of a data system that records student progress from early childhood to postsecondary and beyond and also protects student privacy and confidentiality. This data system was created to provide educators and policymakers aggregate data on Virginia public school students' progress toward college and career readiness. The Hackathon was a 24-hour competition that encouraged the design and creation of new apps to leverage the potential of this data. The Hackathon was held concurrently in five locations across the commonwealth, including the ICAT STUDIOne in Blacksburg. The eveny was co-presented in Blacksburg by ICAT, the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council and Techpad.
